About the Track
Performance Notes
“You Got Lucky was built around a drum loop,” Campbell said. “I had created one in my home studio and layered the music on top of it. When we went into the studio, we decided to recreate the loop manually. Our drummer played a part, and we literally cut the tape and spliced it into a loop. We ran it around the room using mic stands and fed it through the tape heads. We printed that loop for three or four minutes, and then recorded the song over it.”
Petty added the lyrics and came up with the idea for the guitar solo. He suggested they do sort of a surf guitar with a tremolo arm, like in the Clint Eastwood movie The Good, The Bad And The Ugly.
About the Lyrics
In this song, Tom Petty does some posturing, telling a girl that she got lucky when he found her, and warning her that she can do no better. All that posturing is wrapped in a chorus with a simple message: "Good love is hard to find."
